Driving through the prairie dog colony in the early morning, I noticed a burrowing owl standing within the colony in Grasslands National Park.

A friend of mine and I went to Grasslands National Park to find the burrowing owls. We were fortunate enough to find a few burrows although they were very far away. This burrow had 5 juvenile owls.

Looking every bit like a wise old gentleman, this Burrowing Owl stands guard over its burrow. The Burrowing Owl is our only species of owl that nests underground, an obvious adaption to the prairie landscape.

I had arrived before sunrise to get myself into position to watch family of Burrowing Owls as they awoke from their burrow. It was so entertaining to watch as the youngsters appeared one by one of out of the burrow and started their morning stretch routine. They would contort themselves into all sorts of positions as they stretched out each wing and leg, readying themselves for the day. This particular image made me think of the matadors with their capes as they stared down the charging bull and is one of my favorite captures of this very memorable experience.

These tiny owls live in prairie dog colonies and reuse the burrows dug by them. When in a good location, you can find several families of owls on a single colony.

Burrowing owls are extremely rare on the eastern side of the country. Luckily for me, this one spent this summer on a farmland close from home and liked to stay in a beatiful larch tree, the perfect perch to showcase this beautiful bird!

The Manitoba Burrowing Owl Recovery Program bands and draws blood from a wild Burrowing Owlet. There is estimated to be under 5 wild Burrowing Owl nesting pairs in Manitoba. The Manitoba Burrowing Owl Recovery Program is a reintroduction, research, and educational organization that was established in 2010 to address the ongoing decline of Burrowing Owls in southwestern Manitoba. The program began by reintroducing a small number of owl pairs in 2010 with cooperation from private landowners in southwestern Manitoba.

It has been on my bucket list for a number of years to see a burrowing owl. I know they are found in Grasslands National Park so headed there this summer to finally find some. I was rewarded one evening with watching 2 of them. This one was busy looking for bugs and was quite entertaining to watch.

The Burrowing Owl is so tiny and fast that to capture a moment with one was incredibly rewarding. There were a few owls nesting near their burrows and we were watching them. When I turned around I noticed this little owl watching us.

Burrowing Owl We've all seen road signs on the highways warning of deer, moose etc, but while driving through Moose Jaw Saskatchewan in August 2010 I saw this road sign pretty much in the middle of the community. I just loved that there were the street lights, school crossing signs and stop lights all visible in line with the burrowing owl sign of 'urban wildlife'.
